AS I was changing Jac tonight he was crying (not unusual). I noticed that he had a bulge on his left hand side in his groin area. After he stopped crying it went away. I called the doctor and spoke with a nurse at Children's Hospital in Denver. She told me that from my description it is likely an inguinal hernia and will need to be surgically repaired.
Augh! This is now what I was expecting. I thought we were past all of this.
According to this article on emedicine.com the likelihood of an inguinal hernia is as high as 50% in premature and low-birth weight babies (which he is obviously both).
We have a call in to the doctor's office to go in tomorrow and have the doctor look at it. The nurse told us it is a very good sign that it went away and that he is not crying a lot - and that is eating normally.
We will see what the doctor says tomorrow.
From what I have read the surgical repair for the hernia is quite common and straightforward. In preemies they sometimes admit them to the hospital for observation for 24 hours after the surgery to watch for apnea and bradycardias. In older babies and children it is usually an outpatient procedure.
